Validation programme for professional qualification as a retail salesperson

What the profession involves

The retail salesperson works in a customer-oriented manner to sell products/services to retail customers in order to achieve the commercial objectives of the organisation.

The retail salesperson:

  • goes through all the steps of the sales process in a professional manner;
  • deals professionally with theft and theft prevention,
  • looks after inventory, the retail space and after-sales service;
  • receives products and goods and checks the delivery;
  • maintains the sales area and products in the department;
  • prepares products and articles (labeling, theft protection, etc.) and presents them in a commercial manner;
  • handles complaints professionally, according to company procedures;
  • works solution- and target-oriented.

If you want to demonstrate your experience as a retail salesperson at a validation body, you will do so by means of a practical test and a case study.

The language of instruction for the tests is Dutch.

You will be tested on whether you

  • can prepare and present at least 15 products and articles;
  • can process at least 2 online purchases;
  • can look up professional information related to sales;
  • can deal professionally with at least 3 customers, answering questions from Dutch, French and English-speaking customers;
  • can deal with an incident of (attempted) theft;
  • receive and check at least two deliveries;
  • handle at least one customer complaint professionally;
  • receive payments and operate the cash register for at least three customers;
  • assist at least one customer with an automatic cash register system;
  • stock and maintain a designated area of the shop;
  • monitor stock and place orders;
  • can determine purchase requirements and advise on products and services in accordance with the organisation’s commercial rules, for at least 3 customers, including 2 Dutch-speaking customers and 1 French-speaking or English-speaking customer;
  • can complete at least 2 sales;
  • can perform at least 2 after-sales services in accordance with the guidelines.
