Validation programme for professional qualification as a bicycle repairer

What the occupation involves

The bicycle repairer builds (electric) bicycles, related products (trailers, e-steps, wheelchairs, etc.) and their accessories on customer demand. They will:

  • adjust them, maintain them, repair and replace their parts to make them roadworthy,
  • maintain and repair mechanical, electrical and electronic components of (electric) bicycles and related products,
  • estimate costs and repair times and advise/inform users on usage (maintenance, safety, etc.),

They work in a workshop, on site at the customer’s premises or on the road. They exchange information with colleagues, clients and superiors in a constructive and user-friendly manner. They handle dangerous situations and safety and environmental regulations attentively.

If you want to demonstrate your experience as a bicycle repairer at a validation test centre, you do so through a practical test and an interview.

The tests’ instruction language is Dutch. You need at least a basic knowledge of Dutch to take the tests.

You will be tested on your ability to:

  • check and assemble the parts of at least one classic or electric bicycle,
  • perform at least one complete maintenance process for a classic or electric bicycle,
  • perform repairs on at least two mechanical systems and on at least one electrical or electronic system of a classic or electric bicycle.
